Promise Kept
I made a vow
I wouldn’t allow
myself to make
the same mistakes
my parents did
when I had kids.
In a way, I stayed
that covenant.
The mistakes I made
were different.
Author’s Notes:
As hard as we try to be better parents, we end up making our own mistakes.
Still, I feel like each generation is improving in emotional intelligence, vulnerability, relational connection, healthy boundaries, and ability to let go of ego. We’re accepting that we have a choice to pass on our hurts or our healing. I see more people embracing therapy, knowing that the only way to break the cycle of pain is to do their own healing.
Maybe over time, future generations will be better because we tried to do better than our previous generation.
